Saw PalmettoProstAvan® by Melaleuca - Benefits of Saw Palmetto

Researched and Written by Brenda Templin

Our research on Prostate Health is split into two reports: Saw Palmetto and Lycopene. As you may know, these are two of the key ingredients in Melaleuca's ProstAvan® product.

It is always recommended that you inform your health care practitioner if you are taking any over-the-counter medication or natural health products, as they can react adversely with some prescription drugs. If you have a medical condition, consult with your physician before taking these or any other herbs.

If you have prostate problems, share this Journal of the American Medical Association article with your doctor. In the article, Saw Palmetto Extracts for Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, is a JAMA review of existing evidence regarding the therapeutic efficacy and safety of the saw palmetto. Conclusions: "The existing literature on S repens for treatment of BPH is limited in terms of the short duration of studies and variability in study design, use of phytotherapeutic preparations, and reports of outcomes. However, the evidence suggests that S repens improves urologic symptoms and flow measures. Compared with finasteride (drug treatment), S repens produces similar improvement in urinary tract symptoms and urinary flow and was associated with fewer adverse treatment events. Further research is needed using standardized preparations of S repens to determine its long-term effectiveness and ability to prevent BPH complications.

The fact of the matter is that for most common illnesses there is greater support in the medical literature for a natural approach than there is for drugs or surgery." )

In the article Saw Palmetto Shrinks Enlarged Prostate Tissue, Krista Morien of the Herb Research Foundation cites a randomized clinical trial which show that saw palmetto not only improves symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, but also reduces swelling in enlarged prostate tissue.

In the article, Phytomedicines outperform synthetics in treating enlarged prostate, Rob McCaleb, HRF of the Herb Research Foundation notes that saw palmetto offers superior symptomatic relief in prostate disease, as defined by the most common clinical tests and it improves quality of life and has a "practically negligible side effect risk."
